A twig of interweaving passages

ある時、毎日通う道で心惹かれる形をした一本の枝を拾いました。そして次の日、またその場所で同じように枝を見つけ、次の日、そしてまた次の日とそれは続き、拾った枝は私の作業場の机の上でこんもりと積み上がりました。なぜ、その場所には目に留まる枝があるのか。不思議に思いその場所へ行き、辺りを見回してみると、頭上には鳥の巣があったのです。私が拾った枝は、この鳥の巣を作る過程で落ちたものだと知った瞬間、私は鳥の世界を覗き見てしまったかのような、衝撃と驚きに満ちた気持ちになりました。それは、私が心惹かれ美しいと思って拾った枝と、鳥が巣を作るために合理性を求めて集めた枝が、接点を持ったことへの驚きであり、木の枝の「かたち」を通して、鳥の住む世界が再生された瞬間でした。
私たちの生きる世界は、いくつもの異なる層を織り交ぜながら存在していますが、何かのきっかけによってこの様々な層が開示され、同一視される瞬間があります。その時、私たちは決して無くならない隔たりを持った他者をほんの少し俯瞰するための高台に立つことができます。あなたを通して私を、そして私はあなたの世界を想像してみたいのです。

One day, as I walked along the same path I take every day, I picked up a twig whose shape somehow captivated me. The next day, I found another twig in the same place. And the next day, again. This continued for some time, and soon, a small pile of twigs had quietly formed on my studio desk. I began to wonder̶why were there so many striking twigs in that particular spot? Curious, I went back and looked around. That’s when I noticed a bird’s nest above me. The twigs I had been collecting were the ones that had fallen during the process of the bird building its nest. In that moment, I felt as though I had inadvertently glimpsed into the bird’s world. I was filled with both awe and surprise. The twigs I had chosen for their beauty were the very same ones the bird had gathered out of necessity and instinct. That overlap̶the convergence between my aesthetic intuition and the bird’s functional selection̶was profoundly moving. Through the shape of a twig, a small fragment of the bird’s world had been recreated before me.
The world we live in is composed of many overlapping layers̶of time, space, and different ways of perceiving. And every so often, something unexpected reveals a moment where those layers align and become visible. In such moments, we stand on a small elevation, where we can briefly look across the distance that separates us from others. Through you, I want to know myself̶and I want to imagine you.

Asako Shiroki (b. 1979, Tokyo) currently lives and works in Berlin and Tokyo. She completed her PhD in Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts.
