Masayuki Kawai "CHAOSMOS"
Feb. 22 (Sat) - Mar. 22 (Sun), 2020

Open only Sat and Sun 12:00 - 19:00 | Closed on Mon-Fri
Opening Reception: Feb. 22 (Sat), 18:30 - 20:30

Masayuki Kawai creates video works in a unique and philosophical style that is gaining reputation abroad in such settings as ART BASEL Hong Kong 2018 and TAIPEI DANGDAI 2020 in recent years. In this solo exhibition, under the theme of CHAOSMOS - the fusion of chaos and cosmos - we exhibit an exemplary series of his works that use ‘video feedback’ created by analog devices.

Kawai, also a theorist, understands the ‘analog’ as the essence of video which is subject to every chance and change, opposing it to the digital which formulaically utilizes signal while excluding noise. Each of Kawai’s works, by using analog circuits, is a kind of living system, changing infinitely and never repeating an instant. They elicit the pleasure of eternally mutating images that appear as cosmos in the finite world yet are open to infinite chaos: chaosmos.

About the artist:

Masayuki Kawai was born in 1972. He creates video works in a unique style that offers radical visions of philosophy and politics from his consideration and criticism of informational society and the essence of media. His exploratory techniques and activities are unconstrained by existing genres such as film, contemporary art, and media art. His works have been shown in over 30 countries and have received numerous awards in festivals and exhibitions including Oberhausen Short Film Festival and Young Video Artists Initiative at Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. They are collected by Queens Museum of Art in New York (USA) and at the National Museum of Art in Osaka (Japan).

Kawai was invited artist in residence at the Jerusalem Center for Visual Arts, ISCP (USA), and Le Cube and Cité international des arts in Paris, with support from the Jerusalem Foundation, Agency for Cultural Affairs for Japanese Government, POLA Art Foundation, Tokyo Wonder Site, City Government of Paris and Culturesfrance.

To establish a critical role for video art in the society of spectacle, Kawai as video artist, curator, and writer, directed a number of enlightening and challenging exhibitions and festivals, and published theoretical monographs delineating the field of "visual philosophy". He holds a B.A. in aesthetics and a M.A. in representation and culture from University of Tokyo.
